Food Market

Food Market

A choice-based community food pantry at Hope House in Guelph.

No one in our community should have to choose between healthy food, a clean home, or necessary hygiene products. Unfortunately, that is often the reality for families living in poverty.

The Hope House Food Market is here to ensure that everyone in Guelph can provide their family with nutritious meals and household necessities.

The Food Market is a welcoming, choice-based pantry open to both working and non-working individuals and other families who need a helping hand.

Community members are free to shop the market for food and other items while receiving guidance from our volunteers on how to make the most of their budget, and receive ideas on nutritious and delicious recipes.

How does the Food Market work?

The Food Market is a welcoming place where people are free to choose what’s best for them and their families.

Each family who visits the food market receives a certain amount of “bucks” to spend on the items of their choice during their appointment.
Families with infants and young kids also receive separate bucks especially for baby products.

The “prices” are equivalent to the retail cost of groceries.

Our volunteers are on hand to help community members budget and tally their bucks, while raising awareness and encouraging healthy choices.
Some volunteers pass along tips and recipes from our Edu-Kitchen programs.

The market is designed to empower community members to fill their cart and shop with dignity. Allowing the freedom of choice minimizes food waste and creates awareness of budgeting for healthy meals.
